Kai & Sunny joined by famous names for novel collaboration...

Before hitting the top of the bestseller list with his novel Cloud Atlas, author David Mitchell lived and worked in Japan, and it is his translation of Naoki Higashida’s novel The Reason I Jump, about an autistic teen who finds comfort in nature, that is the basis for artistic duo Kai & Sunny‘s collection Caught by the Nest. This series of pieces looks at elements of the natural world through an abstraction of geometrical patterns, rendered in impressive large-scale installations and screen prints infused with copper and “stardust”.

The collection has prompted Mitchell to write a short story, Lots of Bits of Star, in response, and he isn’t the only famous name to collaborate with Kai & Sunny: the pair has joined forces with graphic artist extraordinaire Shepard Fairey on two versions of an image in which the central core of Shepard’s “Obey” star bursts outwards in a flower pattern. As Shepard says the luminosity of the metallic pigments needs to be seen in person, and you can do just that at the Subliminal Projects gallery on Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles, until 5 October. Prints are available in a limited number
