RCA graduates show off their work in the real world...

The Royal College of Art is undoubtedly an top notch breeding ground for fledgling designers, but all the study in the world won’t pay the bills once the scrolls have been handed out and the mortar boards tossed gaily in the air. During this year’s London Design Week, Protein-backed gallery 18 Hewett Street was helping the recent crop of graduates spread their wings and fly out into the world with the Going Into Business exhibition, organised by RCA alumnus Tom Gottelier to provide a showcase and retail platform for the college’s most recent graduates.

It’s a tough climate the class of 2013 find themselves arriving in, and they have responded to the challenge with an accessible range of products. Among our favourites is the collection of precarious looking tableware (that also appeared at Tent as part of Brink) from Bilge Nur Saltik which not only balances cleverly but emits a pleasing pink glow from the underside, and Dagny Rewera and Lucy Norman’s Winter Tide lights – a ‘cool’ update on the lava lamp containing an icy looking substance which continually shifts. The future of design looks very bright indeed.
