The Great Indoors

German set designer Marion Seul turned her televisual talents to tarting up the caravans inside and out, and her diverse designs offer something in a style to suit everyone’s tastes – assuming your taste includes caravans and motor homes, of course...

Good news budding hoteliers! A big budget is no longer a prerequisite to create a super-hip venue – in fact, you don’t even need a proper building in the conventional sense, it seems a warehouse or disused aircraft hangar will do the job very nicely. An impressive collection of vintage caravans is essential, however.

Hot on the heels of Hotel Hüttenpalast in Berlin comes BaseCamp Bonn. Both feature renovated caravans brought indoors, but where Hüttenpalast is an intimate little venue, BaseCamp is a cavernous site with 15 ‘vans, two railway sleeper coaches, four US Airstream trailers, a smattering of VW campers, and even a converted East German Trabant offering a total of 120 beds. German set designer Marion Seul turned her televisual talents to tarting up the caravans inside and out, and her diverse designs offer something in a style to suit everyone’s tastes – assuming your taste includes caravans and motor homes, of course. Each one comes with its own little plot of land for sitting out, imaginatively demarcated and furnished with themed seating. It’s being marketed as a youth hostel, so expect more exuberant neighbours than a standard caravan site.
