Hotel Escondido

Surf's up at Grupo Habita's Mexican beach hut paradise...

We’re away to Mexico now, which you may have figured out yourselves from the unsettling outburst of cactii in the picture below. Puerto Escondido in Oaxaca, more specifically, on the Pacific coast to the south of the country. Design Hotels, ever-ready with a packed portfolio of lovely places to stay, has added another to its books in the chiselled surf-bod shape of Hotel Escondido. The hotel is really more of a beach hut village, which has been created to take advantage of Zicatela Beach, an internationally-renowned surf destination which offers waves to suit all levels of ability.

Hoteliers Carlos Couturier and Moises Micha from Grupo Habita have bagged themselves a private stretch of coastline for the enjoyment of Hotel Escondido guests, but if you’d prefer to chill instead of thrills and spills, this relaxed resort is the perfect place for that too, and there’s fishing and boating nearby if that’s more your speed. This place has a pleasantly laid-back “beach bum glam” vibe, although the pair’s hospitality empire means your stay should be high-class. There are 16 beach-front bungalows in which to take a load off, topped with authentic palapa rooftops, and more local materials have been used underfoot for the wooden floorboards, bearing bold but minimalist Mexicana designs. But most importantly, the huts are all within sight and earshot of that lovely beach. Is it too early for a piña colada?
