Face Value

Life leaves its mark in Ricardo Cavolo's intricate portrait series...

It’s all go for Spanish artist Ricardo Cavolo. New exhibition, new website, and new home, having recently relocated from Madrid to Brighton. No offence to Brighton, lovely place, but what on Earth were you thinking Ricardo? Anyway, temporary lapses in geographical judgement aside, this is an artist going places professionally, having been commissioned by a number of big name brands such as Converse and Nike and recently doing some in-store muralling for Urban Outfitters.

Life & Lives is Cavolo’s latest studio series, which brings into being a cast of characters from the artist’s imagination who are living on the margins of their respective societies. A Baltimore hoodrat, a gypsy girl and a pair of Mongolian siblings are among the figures who take centre stage in Cavolo’s portraits, and the intricate compositions tell their life stories through biographical tattoos packed with vivid events and supporting cast members around which the viewer weaves their own narrative.

Atomica Gallery has recently moved too, from East London to the heart of Soho. Give yourselves a free Christmas present and head to the new Berwick Street address between 5 and 29 December to catch Life & Lives, which includes 15 portraits and a wall mural created on-site by Cavolo in the lead-up to the exhibition.
