Sail Away

Escape the winter blues with Charlie Billingham's sun-drenched collection...

Let’s face it, once Christmas has come and gone it just seems like a long, cold slog towards May. A cheery little thought for you there, but we can help! To to help overcome those post-holiday blues, pack yourselves a picnic basket and cast off for the warm, tranquil waters of Ceri Hand Gallery, there to bask in the sun-kissed summery creations of artist Charlie Billingham.

A watercolour Charlie painted while on holiday in Greece provided the spark for this larger project called Tender. The painting can be seen transformed into the tapestries that lie at the centre of the architectural installation, on which rest the dominant elements of Tender. Three shapes, based on the silhouettes of Laser Pico sailing boats and made from zebrano wood and chrome, form a display for a pair of paintings. These boats can be seen in the extended series of works stretching along the gallery’s longer walls. Each shows a pair of boats, with the viewer invited to decide whether the craft are at rest or if the scene is an action snapshot. Tender will remain moored at Ceri Hand Gallery until 18 January.
