Dover Street Market

Department store with a difference woos New York fashionistas…

You’ve got so much money that your bank account is literally full. You want to be cool and edgy, but you’re scared of going to actual flea markets because they are full of poor people and old, cheap things and they smell funny. We sympathise.

Dover Street Markets are just the ticket. Here you can find high-end hyper-hip designer fashion collections rubbing shoulders (but only figuratively, darling) with a rotating selection of items and displays by contemporary artists, all housed in an unfinished symphony of corrugated iron, salvaged wood and bare concrete. DSM New York has just opened, joining sister establishments in London and Tokyo. The concept is the brainchild of Comme des Garçons’ Rei Kawakubo, and teasing aside, it’s a pretty interesting take on the humble department store. Things change every six months with the coming of “tachiagri” or “new beginnings”; the store is closed while the brands, installations and the layout itself is given a shake-up. But do remember to bring daddy’s credit card.
