Paper Trails

Get lost in the absorbing atmosphere of Jacob Hashimoto's sculpture...

There are two ways of looking at the Gas Giant Studies by Jacob Hashimoto – as stand-alone works of art and as blueprints for a forthcoming installation at MOCA Pacific Design Centre, Los Angeles. These large scale pieces are set to take over the Martha Otero Gallery in the same city as a prelude to the main event, but are captivating enough in their own right.

Hashimoto’s atmospheres of crafty paper objects rise from the ground to the upper reaches of the gallery, snaking through the architecture as though expanding to fill the space. Clusters of repeating geometric patterns create volume, their cellular qualities drawn from the digital world of video games such as Minecraft with its seemingly infinite levels. The Colorado native’s studies will remain suspended at the gallery from 20 February to 5 April, and the artist will give a talk at Ahmanson Auditorium at MOCA Grand Avenue on 23 February.
