Nordburger, Norwood

Adelaide outlet Nordburger is a New York style diner with a difference...

Nordburger designer collaborators Genesin Studio and Peter Jay Deering were tasked with producing a burger joint that didn’t look like your typical diner, so it was out with the Formica table tops and booth banquettes, and in with an altogether more industrial look with extra side orders of concrete, wood and tile. The Parade in Norwood, Adelaide, is the location for this restaurant which recreates the classic New York street diner in a thoroughly contemporary way.

The thin footprint lent itself to using a long bar as the focal point; the feature has been constructed at the perfect height for customers to eat at but also allows visual access to the open kitchen where watching the food preparation becomes part of the overall experience. The stools, set into concrete bases, keep things tidy and free of trip hazards, and a washbasin has been included in the main dining area – ideal for a quick freshen up before the meal, or to get rid of any stray relish before dashing back to the office for that important meeting, which is a thoughtful touch.
