All-girl cast stars in show examining what it means to be a young woman in Asia...

I know “Girl Power” is a bit 1990s Spice Girls, but I’m a child of my time, and the phrase really hits the nail on the head when it comes to describing this show at Kult, Singapore, so I’m going to run with it. Girls of the Underworld – the name of the exhibition – is all about investigating what it means to be a young woman in Asia right now, if you happen to be a young woman who is rather talented at art, and existing outside the mainstream.

There is, one notes, a fair bit of pink on display, but not in the My Little Pony way. Adeline Tan uses the colour to revisit David Bowie as Aladdin Sane in her bubbly work Starman. Caramelaw seems a bit more cutesy, until the sharp teeth of her super sweet candy cane characters register with the viewer. Dewi Marie Vincoy employs the colour to deliver the question at the back of many girls’ minds. There’s also a dark side to the show, with Emma Maxwell questioning the family ideal, and a sense of optimism as Esther Goh’s subject sheds her skin and becomes something new. Girls of the Underworld runs until 28 June.
