After featuring Dulux’s brilliant ‘Let’s Colour’ campaign – here, and here – it would seem that people are going crazy for vibrant street painting. Dutch artists Jeroen Koolhaas and Dre Urhahn have previous here though, their first ‘Favela Painting‘ was back in 2006 and yielded two murals which were painted in Vila Cruzeiro, Rio’s most notorious slum. This time their back on a monumental scale – unveiling a 7,000sqm art intervention that sees 34 houses, on the giant hillside favela of Praça Cantão, given a beautifully vivid overhaul…..

Having, like many of us, been perturbed by the amount of spat-out gum that unpleasantly adorns our streets, University of Brighton student Anna Bullus had the rather disturbing brainwave of recycling said gum…. “I suddenly realised that chewing gum is already a rubber, and rubber can be recycled and made into stuff, so why not gum?” Eight months in the lab, and Anna had developed the process – using secret ingredients to extract a polymer that she calls BRGP (Bullus Recycled Gum Polymer). Already declared by Marie Claire as one of 20 women to “Change the World 2010,” Anna’s company, Gumdrop Ltd., are now set to produce pink bubble bins – from recycled gum of course – that will be situated around London… once full, the bin and contents can then be recycled to produce all manner of plastic goods….

Inspired by the nomadic Ayoreo Indians of Paraguay, ‘Chairless‘ is a vision of simpicity designed/stolen by Alejandro Aravena for Swiss design giants, Vitra. It’s a chair that’s not a chair, an action that has become a product…. as Aravena himself describes, when we want to drink we instinctively “put our hands together and create a kind of bowl”, when we want to see into the distance we “put our hand above our eyebrows shading our eyes”, and “when we sit on the ground, we intuitively put our arms around our legs”. Whilst the bowl and visor have long been a part of our lives, the cloth band used by the Ayoreo Indians has not, until of course now, as it has been industrialised by Aravena into ‘Chairless’, a new concept in seating that allows us the freedom to sit comfortably wherever we may be…. Vitra, if you’re listening, we wouldn’t half mind giving these a go at Glastonbury…. you know where we are!

Screen printed in strictly limited quantities, Les Queues de Sardines‘ cute graphic-print stockings and tights are at the forefront of a somewhat unlikely trend for 2010, the traditional printed tights taken to a new mischievous level. Playful and eye-catching, Les Queues de Sardines’ distinct designs are exclusively stocked at the rather unlikely venue of Fortnum & Mason in the UK, a whole host of designer outlets in France, including the ever-stylish Colette and a selection of international retailers.

Should we be lucky enough to have a few acres and some whopping great trees outside our gaff then we genuinely couldn’t think of a more exciting prospect than bagging one of Dustin Feider’s awe-inspiring O2 Treehouses. Built from 100% sustainable materials and ensuring healthy, unrestricted tree growth, these modular structures, based upon a geodesic sphere, are the must-have for the rich and famous who just want to get away from it all…. Hardwood floorings, interconnected bridges, elecrtic winches, water-tight seals and sophisticated lighting solutions ensure that this is somewhere you can spend a serious amount of time, and with a percentage of proceeds going to eco-tourism projects, your fabulous new place in nature needn’t seem all that extravagant.

If you haven’t been living under a rock for the last 18 months or so, you’ll have no doubt noticed that the world’s most popular toy has been going from strength to strength. It’s not that the 77 year old Danish company had ever really dropped off the radar, but in recent months we’ve seen James May building a Lego house, the Lego digital camera, Lego iPod docks and even the quite fabulous Lego kitchen. It’s no great surprise then to see the trend continue and with Christmas just around the corner, what better idea for the Lego lover in your life than a cute, retro, Lego wallet?
Music
November 12th, 2009
We’re gonna say this quietly, but ‘grunge’ is looking an early contender for the revival story of 2010. Electronic music, and the wonderfully dirty bass of dubstep/wonky/aquacrunk/[insert this weeks sub-genre], may be continuing it’s relentless ascendancy from underground to overground, but the outrageous uninhibitedness of ‘Pulled Apart By Horses‘ and pop-rock sensibilities of ‘Dinosaur Pile-Up‘ certainly look set to take a grip on the nation’s playlists in the coming 12 months. No better time then to reminisce one the fabulously gritty late 80s to early 90s Seattle and it’s grubby assortment of disenfranchised youths who would go on to change the face of modern rock music. Celebrated rock photographer Michael Lavine showcases his work from the time whilst Sonic Youth legend Thurston Moore writes fondly of the movement and the bands involved. Whether you’re looking to the future or just want to relive a bit of your heady youth, this beautifully presented book is a must-have.
