Always one for the amalgamation of music and visual arts, James Lavelle has endeavored to blur these boundaries since the early 1990s… from bringing Futura’s work to a wider audience in the early days of Mo Wax, through Jonathan Glazer’s iconic video for Rabbit In Your Headlights, right up to John Hillcoat’s Ray Winstone starring promo for UNKLE’s latest. It’s no surprise then, that Lavelle is taking his dual passions into an exhibition space, and from Friday 27 to Monday 30 August London’s Haunch of Venison will play host to a unique exhibition where an inspired selection of contemporary artists will create a brand new artwork inspired by new music composed for the project by UNKLE. Innovative, challenging and multi-sensory… it’s all Lavelle knows.

We don’t know a great deal about London artist ‘Snuggles‘ apart from that he/she has a penchant for Disney characters and, well, fucking about with said Disney characters. Our favourite, from a batch of new stencil artworks that also includes an evil Pinocchio and a 3-eared Goofy, is this ‘Duck You Too!’ stencil – of which you can bag yourself either the super-limited run of 25 digital prints at a ridiculously reasonable £15, or alternatively the not so reasonable yet tremendously more limited run of 3 stencil and spraypaint editions…..

Upon reading of Namibia’s abandoned diamond mines, Lanzarote/Barcelona-based photographer Alvaro Sanchez-Montañes, set himself on one day documenting the ghost towns and disused properties that had been, over time, ravaged by the unforgiving Namib desert. The otherworldly images that he finally captured look part art-installation, part post-apocalyptic, yet the beauty of the starkness encapsulated within these images manages to portray desolation and loneliness as magical and mysterious. Sanchez-Montañes’ breathtaking photographs are as inspirational as they are intriguing…..

Late last year we wrote about German artists Mark Landwehr and Sven Waschk and their darkly beautiful ‘False Friends‘ limited edition toy/art figures. Since then, the artists have been going from strength to strength and produced some astonishingly exquisite new sculptures along with a selection of photography, prints and objects which now comprise a solo exhibition at Chicago’s Rotofugi Gallery until August 8th. Dark, menacing yet always terrifyingly beautiful, Landwehr and Waschk’s work is something we’re sure you’ll be seeing more and more of…..

Famous for the 1991 international bestseller Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture, Canadian Douglas Coupland resumed his work in visual arts in 2000, following a 10 year hiatus that coincided with his international literary fame. A recent edition to his body of work is this beautiful ‘digitised’ sculpture of a killer whale that is now a resident of Vancouver’s Convention Centre. Imposing, unique and decidedly post-modern, the metal structure with it’s nighttime illumination is a dazzling new icon for Vancouver’s charming harbour….

Coinciding with the theatrical release of the highly lauded “When you’re Strange” documentary, Shoreditch’s brilliant Idea Generation Gallery, in conjunction with Morrison Hotel Gallery, is currently playing host to a mesmerising collection of photographs – iconic shots alongside more personal reflections – by Henry Diltz, Joel Brodsky, Bobby Klein and Ken Regan, who all documented the sensationally controversial, and quite brilliant, band at the height of their popularity – and notoriety. Showing until 27th August at 11 Chance Street, this is a must for anyone with even the slightest interest in rock history…..

After featuring Dulux’s brilliant ‘Let’s Colour’ campaign – here, and here – it would seem that people are going crazy for vibrant street painting. Dutch artists Jeroen Koolhaas and Dre Urhahn have previous here though, their first ‘Favela Painting‘ was back in 2006 and yielded two murals which were painted in Vila Cruzeiro, Rio’s most notorious slum. This time their back on a monumental scale – unveiling a 7,000sqm art intervention that sees 34 houses, on the giant hillside favela of Praça Cantão, given a beautifully vivid overhaul…..

Famous for it’s radical graphic design and the ‘Swiss Style’ – or International Style – Switzerland, for all it lacks in size, has long been at the forefront of contemporary design, from print right through to architecture, just look at the international influence of Basel-based architects, Herzog & de Meuron or the undeniable legacy of Le Corbusier. A forthcoming exhibition at London’s ‘A Foundation‘ hopes to show that none of the Swiss gusto for creative excellence has waned as it presents 22 young designers and design studios who deliver “cutting edge aesthetic innovation”. Switzerland: Design For Life runs from 19th June – 1st July, showcasing the talented young Swiss designers in this feature, along with ‘Reinventing an Image’ – a mini-exhibition that will display 10 of Switzerland’s most influential and iconic vintage posters alongside 10 newly created works by some of the country’s leading design studios…..
