new design for London's icon unveiled....
Design
May 18th, 2010
Scheduled to hit the streets by 2012, the final design for London’s “new Routemaster bus” has been unveiled, and whilst we’re unsure what has happened to the Foster + Partners / Aston Martin design that originally won Boris Johnson’s 2008 competition, we do know that more than a little has been ‘borrowed’ from said design in this version – a collaboration between Transport of London, Wrightbus and Heatherwick Studio (they of Shanghai Expo UK Pavilion fame)…..
new issue of our favourite poetry/illustration magazine....
Design
April 29th, 2010
Regular readers will know of our love for the lovingly produced Popshot Magazine and for the wonderfully talented man behind it, Jacob Denno…. and the third, frighteningly good, edition of the magazine that is “gently intent on hoodwinking poetry back from the clammy hands of school anthologies and funeral readings”, does little to disappoint. Packed to the rafters with 50 of the world’s finest poets and illustrators, you can expect some fantastically challenging content in the shape of ejaculation, beating up the Dalai Lama and your grandmother growing her brain… we had mentioned their intent on stripping poetry of it’s tweed wearing history hadn’t we?

putting construction hoardings to creative use....
Design
March 5th, 2010
In collaboration with East London’s Cure Studio, burgeoning Thai food chain, Busaba Eathai have offered up the hoarding for their forthcoming Shoreditch outlet to feature 5 temporary exhibitions, running over 10 weeks. To be found at 313-319 Old Street, the collaborative space is currently showcasing the beautifully rich photography of London-based Jason Lowe, whilst the remaining works will feature A Child of Jago, HigginsonHurst, VNA magazine and Big Antidote…. Fresh, exciting and undeniably creative, why can’t all construction hoardings offer so much to the local community?
unique style of French art director....

In what is our second ‘paper’ post of the day… French art director Romain Lenancker – not a mistype, his studio name is the other way round – uses the age old descendant of papyrus, not as a material for the fashion industry, but for creating beautiful, avant-garde papermade illustrations for his clients. Somewhat of a unique style, this diversity has won him international clients and considerable recognition in the design scene, having been commissioned by the likes of Lacoste, Creative Review and Reverse Magazine….
lovingly designed homage to forgotten design legend....

Being responsible for some 500 album covers for legendary New York label Folkways, Ronald Clyne’s distinctive two-colour approach gave the label it’s internationally renowned style, and although his influence can be felt the world over, he enjoyed very little coverage in graphic design literature, rendering him a ‘lost hero’ of 20th century design. That is of course until now…. thanks to Unit Editions, London’s newest graphic design book publishers. Unit: Design/Research 01 is the first in a series of ‘newspapers’ that are “devoted to the neglected, hidden and unexpected corners of graphic design and visual culture”, and if this lovingly produced, 64 page, card bound debut edition is anything to go by, this is a series that anybody with even the remotest interest in visual arts should seek out, and follow religiously……

Launching in Berlin Hauptbahnhof, the city’s central station, last week, iconic design store Berlinomat’s ‘Design Vending Machine’ is a rather refreshing upgrade for the humble vending machine. Developed for the store by design team COORDINATION, the Hauptbahnhof prototype will soon be joined by a second and third test – at both Tegal airport and Galeries Lafayette – before rolling out internationally. Claiming to use “the established mechanics of online shopping”, the animated touchscreen interface presents detailed descriptions of all 42 Berlin designed products, ranging from clothing accessories and travel essentials to gifts and even a pepper mill….. offering a glance at the future of shopping, this is an inspirational project with very real potential….
fresh portfolio from Manchester based designer....
Design
February 2nd, 2010
We’re loving the sharp graphic portfolio of Manchester based freelancer Chris Gray, his crisp, distinctive style having a charming retro tinge that we just can’t get enough of. Having worked for the likes of Nike, Umbro and Freitag and had work featured in publications such as Creative Review and idN, Chris is carving somewhat of a name for himself and the international illustration circuit… a forthcoming collaborative exhibition on the 26th of this month in Berlin’s trendy UNDPLUS won’t do that ascendancy any harm either.
