Of all the things we took in on our London Design Festival explorations yesterday, The Applounge was perhaps the most inspirational – certainly in terms of pushing the boundaries of what we perceive to be a traditional retail space. Offering a well-curated selection of physical product – some rather lovely iPhone and iPad cases, watches and even the brilliant PostCardens that we’ve previously featured – alongside an equally well considered array of Apps, eBooks and MP3s, The Applounge also offers coffee and cocktails thanks to its location as a pop-up inside Soho’s famous Meza Restaurant, which, for you pop fans, stands on the site of the legendary Marquee Club…

A collaboration between Spotspot, Method and Digital Wellbeing Labs, The Applounge is a brave new concept, blurring the lines between a social and retail space but more so in it’s experiment to bring digital products into a physical environment – however, with hundreds of thousands of Apps available and countless “expert guides” on newsagent’s shelves, the need for a considered curation of this content is certainly on the rise. Offering visitors/consumers the ability to peruse this digital content are a selection of iPhones and iPads – encased in Spotspot’s innovative ‘BouncePad’ prototype – and with the pick of Apps, and accompanying physical accessories, arranged into 3 curated collections, there’s something to fit everyone’s individual tastes. Innovative, inspirational and experimental, The Applounge is everything that London Design Festival is about…

Owned by Prêt A Manger founder, Sinclair Beecham, the hotel have added free use of iMacs – and most excitingly – iPads to the list of guest freebies that includes Wi-Fi, phone calls and Prêt breakfasts. Located in their new ‘iHox’ area, we believe they’re currently the only London hotel to offer totally free use of Apple’s latest gift from the gods… the others offering them with rates, deposits or executive suite perks. And don’t you just love the accompanying security signage?

Co-founded by Silicon Valley entrepreneur Mike McCue and former iPhone engineer Evan Doll, and with some serious backing – a reported $10.5m from the likes of Twitter creator Jack Dorsey, Facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitz and <del datetime="2010-07-23T10:06:09+00:00">popular filmstar</del> thoroughly annoying Punk’d presenter turned social media giant, Ashton Kutcher – and the acquisition of real-time web intelligence startup, Ellerdale, Flipboard is evidently no ‘flash-in-the-pan’, bedroom-produced application, and with a genuine buzz being felt amongst those at the forefront of publishing, it’s certainly realistic to utter that this could be the first major player in revealing the iPad for the game-changer it’s earmarked to be…..

Not that Flipboard is perfect, in fact presently it’s pretty far from that, but it’s the first genuine insight into the future of publishing that we’ve seen – the reality that you can view your social media content in a traditional magazine format is, for us, a feeling of at last beginning to live in the future you dreamed of as a child. The overwhelming feeling of potential that washes over you as you flick through a magazine that has been compiled from your chosen social media outlets, and that updates instantly, is truly staggering.

Shared items on Facebook and Twitter are instantly transformed into elegantly designed magazine articles, images are automatically – and gracefully – pulled in and there’s a number of options to bookmark and interact. Annoying, cutesy ‘web app’ copywriters have for years been telling us about the “super web magicary” being performed by any given application, but – without wanting to offer superfluous praise – it really feels, when spending time with Flipboard, that this fabled “web magicary” does in fact exist, and that the Silicon Valley entrepreneur’s have unearthed said ‘magicary’ and set it to work at the companies Californian headquarters.

Our recent Virgin Heathrow Clubhouse post as seen through Flipboard

Along with the ability to add in your own Twitter and Facebook accounts, there’s a number of preset or recommended feeds and some particularly well curated collections, such as FlipPhotos, FlipCool, FlipMusic and FlipDesign. So, even if you and your friends aren’t interesting enough, at least there will always be inspiring content on hand – and well designed that content will be.

Typographically and layout wise, Flipboard is streets ahead of anything we’ve seen – whereas, to date, the big names in publishing have offered little more than glorified PDFs of their print versions, Flipboard presents your personalised content in a unique, and seemingly ever-changing way, offering alternate displays for landscape and portrait and brilliant variation through each of the pages – which are changed by a sophisticated ‘flip’ as opposed to the customary, and rather clumsy, turn. There’s even a brilliant, constantly changing front cover.

Of course, it’s not all rosy, high demand upon launch saw some difficulties in adding Facebook and Twitter accounts – although all seems fine now – there’s no option for multiple Twitter accounts, and through lack of being able to tweet directly, it’s unlikely to replace your current Twitter client in a hurry, but, then should it? This is a ‘social media magazine’ after all.

Our most notable gripe is that of the current restriction to 9 sections, but really, for a first release – add in the factor that this is a free app, yes, FREE – Flipboard is a revelation, and the first real opportunity for iPad owners to thrust it under the nose of naysayers and shout “look, this is what it’s all about, it’s the fucking future” – and for that Flipboard, we salute you…..

You may have also seen their brilliant Zurich flagship store – that we visited on our Swiss design trip earlier this year – that follows the company’s ethos, being constructed entirely from rusty, recycled freight-containers – stacked 86ft high. Something you won’t see until early August are these beautiful iPad sleeves, complete with a ‘one-pull’ strap system for easy access, a ‘velvety’ inner lining, and their iconic recycled tarpaulin outers.

Clean, stylish, slick… and, oh so Apple… Seoul based company, Kee Utility Inc. have rewritten the desk top phone handbook, with a little help from everyone’s favourite smartphone. Serving both as a dock for your iPhone, and a fully integrated wired desk phone, the ‘Desk Phone Dock‘ – they’re not as good at naming things as they are designing them – is quite simply the most useful, and certainly one of the most alluringly beautiful, iPhone docks on the market. Currently showing at the AsiaWorld-Expo in Hong Kong, we can’t get any information on availability, however, if they’re showcasing this product at the exhibition, we can positively guarantee that you’ll have seeing more of this sensationally conceived, and poorly named iPhone accessory….

Whoever said that the iPad wouldn’t change things may well like to take a little look at this ridiculously creative approach to magazine publishing, courtesy of all-digital publication, VIVmag. Along with co-directors Cory Strassburger and Ming Hsiung, photographer Alexx Henry has created an interactive motion cover and feature spread for VIVmag, with thoughts of the unmistakable potential of tablet technology foremost in their minds. With the imminent launch of the iPad in mind, Henry’s feature spread perfectly demonstrates the breathtaking potential of next-gen publishing… with moving images and interactive content offering a unique appeal to traditional magazine spreads, the prospect of interactive high fashion is certainly one to whet the appetite of even the most ardent iPad denouncer….

The best news is that Choi’s intelligent slice of remarkable product design will go into production later this year.

If there’s one thing that’s rather disappointed us with iPhone applications, it’s surely been the undeniable dearth of apps that ooze in vogue sophistication… consequently, the recent news of apps from two of the world’s leading lifestyle brands has gone someway to unfurling our brow. Rather similar in terms of content, Design Hotels™ and Wallpaper* have both released city guides with a difference… the difference, of course, being that the recommended hotels, bars, restaurants and sights are all, reassuringly elegant, stylish and achingly hip. Available for Amsterdam, Miami, Copenhagen, Berlin, Paris, London, Sao Paulo, Vienna, Shanghai and Barcelona, Design Hotels™ guides are a collaboration with the culture savvy ‘Unlike City Guides’ and include regularly updated information on shops, clubs, bars, eating out, arts and culture, sights and experiences, and of course, hotels. An events calendar promises much, but as yet appears rather desolate…. let’s hope the promise of regular, seamless updates is a genuine one…..

Wallpaper*’s guides are essentially an app version of their hugely successful, and rather brilliant, Phaidon City Guides, with the added benefit of knowing how far the featured shops, bars, hotels and sights are from your current location. Currently available for their top 10 selling guides, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Berlin, London, Los Angeles, Milan, New York, Paris, Rome and Tokyo, Wallpaper*’s guides include a suitably high-brow ‘architour’ along with insiders tips, brilliant boutiques, iconic landmarks, neighbourhood guides and city escapes… at £2.39 a pop, if you’re travelling to one of said cities, they’re an essential purchase.

Having worked with top architects and fashion designers such as Ron Arad, Zaha Hadid and Hussein Chalayan and produced stage-wear for the likes of Bono, Rhianna and (ahem) Mika, German-born, London-based Moritz Waldemeyer is simply one of the most groundbreaking designers of his kind. Fusing his background in engineering with thoughtful, innovative design, his work with LEDs and lasers see him as the first port of call for designers and artists looking for concepts with a digital twist. When Wallpaper* approached him to design an object with the brief ‘Home Disco’, he responded with typical flair, producing this magical, awe-inspiring electro coffee-table. Sleek, retro coffee-table by day, the unit, which accommodates speakers, an iPod dock and…. wait for it…. a ‘Haze Machine’, fires into life when the lights go down, beaming out Waldemeyer’s trademark lasers to form a wonderfully futuristic dancing cage…… if this is the future, we’re sure glad we’re living it!

The guys over at Hard Graft never seem to put a foot wrong, and their latest collection of sleeves, cases and pouches is no exception. Much like the 2UNFOLD collection we covered back in November, the ‘New High‘ range is skilfully hand crafted from the finest European materials, pure new wool felt and premium aniline cow leather, and the originality in it’s design is second to none. The pictured ‘Y apple laptop sleeve’ is the pick of the bunch with it’s vintage gentleman’s trouser braces inspired Y shaped straps which embrace a magazine or the brilliant add-on pouch with external leather iPhone holder. If you’ve recently bagged yourself a new aluminum MacBook then you won’t be able to resist this…….

Since the Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin dropped onto the scene last year, no iPod docking device has come close to it in terms of style and indeed sound. Trust uber-designer Philippe Starck then to have a pretty good stab at knocking the zeppelin off the top then. His speakers, which have been designed by mobile technology experts Parrot, are deliciously thin, light and incredibly stylish but also pack a punch thanks to their downward-firing woofer which apparently bounces sound from your walls, meaning you can place them pretty much anywhere within the room and achieve a kind of audio-nirvana, unless of course your listening to Coldplay that is. Bluetooth and WiFi enabled, the speakers are capable of streaming music from computers and mobile phones meaning that it’s not just your iPhone or iPod that can act as the audio source.

Berlin based designer Rainer Spehl develops furniture, interiors and exhibition stands for the likes of Nike, Stone Island, Dior and Gucci and seemingly still manages to create in his spare time, designing furniture and products for private clients along with his own collection, which includes this fabulously stylish piece. Spehl’s wooden MacBook case with leather lining and magnetic closing device perfectly juxtaposes the elegance of classic wooden product design with the beauty of Apple’s modern technology, this is not a laptop case for a PC. Available for Apple MacBook and MacBook Pro 15inch, you will need to get in touch directly with Spehl to purchase, we think this probably means that it’s pretty expensive, but we’re more than sure it’s worth it.
