Clarks ‘Light’ Installation by Roso

March 9th, 2010

C. and J. Clark Ltd, or probably better known as ‘Clarks‘, are not what you would expect as typical We Heart material… there is no doubting the world famous footwear giant’s history, yet safe and, well, bland, are possibly the nicest words we could attribute to their… erm, style. Accordingly, it was to our surprise that Royal College of Art graduates, Sophie Nielsen and Rolf Knudsen – aka Roso, a multidisciplinary design studio deeply rooted in art, design and architecture – had been commissioned to design an inspirational art installation at Clarks’ Somerset headquarters. Based around the singular concept that “light is only seen when reflected”, Roso’s ‘Light’ explodes dramatically from the building, literally beaming across the space of the communal courtyard – the thousands of shiny discs, that are attached to suspending wires, casting light in each and every direction, creating a sublime vision as the reflect the colours of their surroundings and generate an almost computer generated pixel effect across the open space….

Michael Landy’s Art Bin

March 8th, 2010

Showing until this weekend – 14th March – at South London Gallery, Michael Landy’s ‘Art Bin‘ does exactly what it says on the tin really, provides a particularly large bin – 600-cubic-metre to be precise – into which artists can dispose of their works…. Famous for having destroyed all of his possessions in the name of art – over 7,000, including his car, birth certificate and VAT records – Landy’s latest work is centered around the concept of failure, and he invites members of the public to submit their creative failures to accompany donations from some of the world’s most prevalent artists – it may indeed be the only time your work is exhibited alongside the likes of Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin and Julian Opie, albeit in a skip. Filling up nicely, and due to be destroyed at the end of the exhibition, this week is the best – and of course last – time to catch this intriguing art statement….

Hoxton Hoarding Project

March 5th, 2010

In collaboration with East London’s Cure Studio, burgeoning Thai food chain, Busaba Eathai have offered up the hoarding for their forthcoming Shoreditch outlet to feature 5 temporary exhibitions, running over 10 weeks. To be found at 313-319 Old Street, the collaborative space is currently showcasing the beautifully rich photography of London-based Jason Lowe, whilst the remaining works will feature A Child of Jago, HigginsonHurst, VNA magazine and Big Antidote…. Fresh, exciting and undeniably creative, why can’t all construction hoardings offer so much to the local community?

COLOR STATE by Malene Landgreen

March 2nd, 2010

Copenhagen’s Kunsthal Charlottenborg was recently taken over by the decidedly colour obsessed Danish artist, Malene Landgreen, where she indulged her fondness for a healthy dose of Dulux and “moved far beyond the conventional frames of painting”… literally going to town on the walls of the contemporary art space in inspired fashion. Landgreen declares that her “work derives meaning from the fact that the uncertain, abstract, unformulated, chaotic and inharmonious, no less than the well-ordered, well-considered and flawless, always relates proportionally to something else. No matter how incomprehensible and ungraspable it might be, indeed precisely because it is. It’s all about relations and proportions. That applies in art, in architecture and in life”… looking for a real life translation? It doesn’t mean, or say much at all… it just looks really nice!

Lenancker Romain’s Paper Installations

March 1st, 2010

In what is our second ‘paper’ post of the day… French art director Romain Lenancker – not a mistype, his studio name is the other way round – uses the age old descendant of papyrus, not as a material for the fashion industry, but for creating beautiful, avant-garde papermade illustrations for his clients. Somewhat of a unique style, this diversity has won him international clients and considerable recognition in the design scene, having been commissioned by the likes of Lacoste, Creative Review and Reverse Magazine….

Gravel Pit by Kim Høltermand

February 24th, 2010

With a similarly bleak tone to the photography we featured recently by Jason Koxvold, Danish architectural photographer, Kim Høltermand presents a collection of beautiful, subtly toned images, entitled ‘Gravel Pit’. His moody, minimalist style has seen a number of accolades bestowed upon the former graphic designer, not least a 1st place in last years International Photography Awards, this – his latest collection – fails to disappoint, presenting an industrial space as a kind of ‘other-worldly’ lunar landscape that is as eerie and disturbing as it is awe-inspiring in it’s beauty…..

Miss Bugs, Cut Out and Fade Out

February 23rd, 2010

With a unique style that sees their striking, often psychotic artworks seemingly emerging from their backgrounds, male and female duo Miss Bugs‘ latest series of street interventions showcases some of their most brilliant work to date. Their unique style, drenched in dark humour and iconography, has seen the duo whip up somewhat of an international storm of hype in recent years, and with work as inspired as this, don’t expect it to be long until the boy from Bristol and girl from Pencoed are demanding similarly outrageous sums of money for their works to that of fellow Bristolian, Banksy.
