Part of Aaron Bondaroff and Al Moran’s vision of an “extraordinary creative mash-up”, OHWOW is a collaborative art venture that, whilst achingly pretentious, delivers products, events and spaces that are a feast of sheer design brilliance. Their latest venture is no different – located in leafy Greenwich Village, the tiny, yet far from diminutive in style and elegance, below street level retail space has been designed by Architecture At Large’s Rafael de Cárdenas to “echo a classic black and white, pre-war NYC bathroom”. Whilst we’re not too familiar with pre-war New York bathrooms – no matter how much research we like to do – we’re firmly familiar with heart-stopping interiors, and this is very high on our list of fabulously unique and perfectly executed designs…..
charming document of the world's most diverse festival....

So taken with photographer Venetia Dearden’s work were iconic British fashion house Mulberry that they’ve gone and sponsored the publication of her new book – a beautiful collection of Glasto-inspired photography that includes portraits of artists, performers and revelers alongside iconic, atmospheric shots of the site. The result is a very special document of a festival like no other – and of course, an obligatory campaign from Mulberry – that being their “Peace Love Mud” mini-site and cute installations in their Bond Street and Madison Avenue stores that exhibit, alongside beautiful bags that you’d be clinically insane to take to the festival, a series of the book’s most provocative shots. All in all, a corporate/art collaboration that really works and takes nothing from the festival’s unique place in our hearts….
beautifully raw art-book focuses on former model....

Delivering a unique style that balances the fine art photography of Ryan McGinley with prevalent ’street style’ work of Yvan Rodic, Manhattan born Valerie Phillips is a rising star with attitude, raw style and a healthy portfolio stacked with work for the likes of Nylon, Elle and Vice. Her new book, Amber Is For Caution, centres on her fascination with Amber, a former model….. “I met Amber when she was 15. She came to my studio for a casting. She was quiet and feisty at the same time, and kind of bratty and fascinating. I loved her slow-paced, drawn out Kentucky sentences, so perfectly out of place in East London. And I really liked how she didn’t seem to give a shit. She was just Amber and that was good enough……” Vacant, fucked up, and elegantly wasted, Amber is captivating throughout, and with an accompanying exhibition – showing at Lazarides, Greek Street from 8th April and Paul Smith in Tokyo from May 2010 – Phillips’ challenging work looks set to receive many more, well deserved, plaudits for some time to come…..

March 3rd, 2010
The simplest of ideas are always the best, and that’s just what fashion/graphic designer Penter Yip has delivered with his exceptional Fashionary notebook. Born from the frustration of sketching out proportioned human figures during his recent fashion studies in Honk Kong and Manchester, Fashionary is simply a notebook with barely visible templates on each page, allowing designers and students to sketch out their ideas, trouble free, wherever they may be. Body measurements, pattern samples and catwalk schedules are just some of the useful reference tools also featured, making Fashionary any designers essential new ‘must-have’…. Currently available in Paris’ always-hip Colette, at Books Import in Milan and online.

Being responsible for some 500 album covers for legendary New York label Folkways, Ronald Clyne’s distinctive two-colour approach gave the label it’s internationally renowned style, and although his influence can be felt the world over, he enjoyed very little coverage in graphic design literature, rendering him a ‘lost hero’ of 20th century design. That is of course until now…. thanks to Unit Editions, London’s newest graphic design book publishers. Unit: Design/Research 01 is the first in a series of ‘newspapers’ that are “devoted to the neglected, hidden and unexpected corners of graphic design and visual culture”, and if this lovingly produced, 64 page, card bound debut edition is anything to go by, this is a series that anybody with even the remotest interest in visual arts should seek out, and follow religiously……

Well, egg-laying, winged vertebrate are pretty far from common place over here at We Heart, but with two posts in a matter of days, maybe we’d better consider changing our tagline to ‘essential wildlife’….. or maybe not… because, much like Friday’s post, it’s the art we’re interested in here, and thanks to Andrew Zuckerman, this art is truly inspiring. Hot on the heels of his ‘Creature‘ and ‘Wisdom‘, Zuckerman has produced another inspired coffee-table sized slab of intricate, touching photography. Simply entitled ‘Bird‘, this third book of sensationally detailed photography features almost 75 species of birds shot on his trademark white background that allows their vibrant colours and unique features to shine through…. delivering a truly unsurpassed visual encyclopedia of our feathered friends.
spirit of Jura captured in ultra-limited book....

January 21st, 2010
We like nothing more than a ‘wee dram’ over here at We Heart HQ and as such it was an privilege when the legendary Isle of Jura distillery offered to give our readers the chance to win a new highly limited ’spirit of Jura’ book and a bottle of a bottle of their classic 10 year old island malt…. An artistic collaboration inspired by the beauty and myths of the island of Jura, “DIH-RAH” is a beautiful book produced by celebrated writer John Burnside and artist David Faithful and being limited to only 300, is sure to be a serious collectors item. A medieval method for producing ink from Jura oak galls was emplyed by Faithful for the illustration and the story was the product of Burnside’s month spent at the luxury distillery lodge after being invited to take part in their writers retreat programme, inspired by George Orwell having penned ‘1984′ during his stay on Jura.
Want to ensure you’re in with a chance of winning one of these lovingly produced books and a bottle of the good stuff? Make sure you’re signed up to receive our bi-weekly email newsletter ‘list_’ and wait for tomorrow’s issue…..
