As Bob’s times were ‘a-changing’, the last few years have certainly seen business ‘a-changing’, as the modern business folk work – to quote another early 60s classic – wherever they lay their hat. Albiet, of course, should they lay their hat somewhere with good connectivity and strong coffee. The good folk behind cheap-chic hotel brand citizenM (we reviewed their Glasgow outpost a while back) have christened this new breed of worker the “business nomads”, and have even gone and built a natural habitation for these nomads. societyM.

Whether hot-desking, getting out of their bedsit cum studio, or meeting and greeting; societyM – which debuts at the aforementioned Glasgow hotel – lavishes its people with all the trappings of a swanky member’s club. There’s wall-to-wall designer furniture – Tom Dixon, Vitra and Moooi providing some serious eye-candy – there’s “creating rooms” with audiovisual shenanigans and wipe-clean walls for brainstorming your next social networking masterpiece, there’s a bar, thinking spaces, and a 50-seater screening room.

They really have got it all covered; and – as with the hotel itself – it’s been designed by superstar Amsterdam agency concrete, and therefore it’s a bloody good-looking space in which to while away your working day…

Stuttgart-based architectural firm Burkhardt Leitner develop, produce and distribute modular system solutions for temporary constructions such as trade fairs, exhibitions and presentation designs. Famous for their high degree of functionality and flexibility, Burkhardt Leitner introduced two new systems at this year’s EuroShop 2011 in a strikingly eye-catching manner, courtesy of this exhibition stand designed by We Heart favourites, Ippolito Fleitz Group. Epitomising their ‘fantastic – systematic’ mission statement, the exhibition stand is an impressive illustration of how the systems provide perfect spatial platforms for creative brand staging. Using blacks, whites and greys in line with the company’s defining minimalist style Ippolito Fleitz have created a playground of reduced construction elements contrasted with fun ornamental detailed accents. Together with the three-dimensional walls, tactile surfaces and clever graphics the Burkhardt Leiter stand invites visitors to experience a new wave of constructive and decorative nuances in a bold and dynamic atmosphere…

If you follow us on Twitter, or perhaps even Foursquare, then you may know that a couple of weeks ago we spent the day on a very “secret” trip to Paris – vente-privee.com, the European pioneers of online private sales, whisked us out of Manchester airport into Charles de Gaulle, and onwards to their rather impressive northern Paris operation. The mission? To infiltrate their headquarters and get a firsthand insight into how one of Europe’s biggest online companies operates. Here’s how it happened…

1130 Hours: Still unsure of what exactly we’re letting ourselves in for – organ harvesting is one of the more worrying suggestions thrown at us – we arrive in the beautiful Charles de Gaulle airport, armed only with the vague but intriguing documents supplied at our briefing…

1230 Hours: Met by the charming Simona from vente-privee.com, concerns of kidnap are finally quelled – quickly boarding one of their fleet of vehicles, it’s not long before we arrive at the company’s new ‘Digital Factory’ and the size of this outfit begins to dawn upon us…

1315 Hours: We meet Jean-Baptiste for a tour of the Digital Factory. There seem to be photography and live motion studios behind every door, and the photography equipment storeroom is bigger than some apartments we’ve seen – it becomes apparent that vente-privee.com’s way of doing things is to keep everything firmly in-house, and we mean everything…

With countless studios, including Jean-Baptiste’s favourite, the new “shower studio” – we guess he’s looking forward to the swimwear shoots in a few months – the Digital Factory handles all the photography that you see on the website, so that means input from designers, photographers, make-up artists, hairstylists, all vente-privee.com employees, meaning that – shooting over 15,000 photos daily – they’re one of Europe’s biggest photo production companies and one of the Parisian modelling industry’s most important clients…

1500 Hours: After a thoroughly pleasant lunch – Foie gras terrine and steak frites if you must know – Simona takes us to the suitably impressive headquarters. Part offices, part studios and, well, part art gallery – it would seem the founders have more than a passing interest in contemporary art – vente-privee.com’s HQ is staggeringly impressive, and with some 1,500 employees, it’s amazing to see what goes on behind the scenes at a dot com…

1515 Hours: We’re swiftly introduced to Leilah King, one of the team who look after the production of sales in the UK and we get an insight into just how much is involved in each of the private sales that take place. With some of the most respected names in the haute couture industry involved, it’s essential that their brand identity is respected at every stage, and from briefing the in-house photographers and graphic designers to structuring the categories and items in each online sale, the production team’s – there are native staff for the UK, Spain, Italy, Germany, and of course France – orchestrate each sale to be uniquely tailored to the brand and their values…

1600 Hours: Having already been suitably blown away by the scale of the operation, the next stage of our secret mission would leave us blown away by the quality -not just the quantity – of vente-privee.com. Accompanying each of the website’s online sales is a teaser campaign, seducing the users with a taste of what the next sale will bring. Fine you think – a quick Flash clip with some products floating in and out. No, this is vente-privee.com – and one thing we’re learning is that everything is done to the same terribly high standards. We meet motion designer Christophe Massouf who runs us through a selection of previous teasers, it’s like sitting through the showreel of a major London advertising agency. They may do everything in-house here, but that certainly isn’t at detriment to the quality of their output, we’re actually a little bit blown away with just what’s involved here…

1630 Hours: The last stop of the day is with Sébastien in the recording studios, yes – recording studios, you didn’t think they’d outsource the music did you? We can’t pretend for one minute that the next 2 hours resembled anything like work – we’re clearly in the wrong game. Together with Sébastien we deconstruct a Bristolian trip-hop classic – brands or the production team will often suggest a track as inspiration for the teaser’s soundtrack – and rebuild it using our ears, Apple’s Logic and the Frenchman’s considerable musical talents. As music obsessives it’s a splendid way to end the day and further proof that if you want something done well, do it yourself…

1830 Hours: It’s dark outside as we leave, allowing us to see just how far they take their pink brand identity, and as we head back to blighty we’re left to reflect on just how impressive vente-privee.com’s sizeable operation is. To move from a team of 4 in 2003 to a forecasted £628 million turnover for 2010, these plucky Parisians are leading the way in bringing high-end fashion to the online market, and with up to 70% discounts on some 1,200 internationally recognised brands, surely it’s a business model that can’t fail…

Ask for a colour associated with banking, and 9 out of 10 will probably come back with ‘grey’ – it’s just one of those industries that tend to offer little in the way of inspiration, which makes emmanuelle moureaux architecture + design‘s wonderfully vivid design for Tokyo’s Sugamo Shinkin Bank all the more worthy of attention. The blisteringly white structure is randomly dotted with large and small windows that are cut into the façade, with beautiful, fresh colours inside the cutaways… the colour palette is continued within, this time in the form of a leaf motif that continues through the interiors. Fresh, original, and capable of putting a smile on the glummest of customers faces… shouldn’t all banking be like this?
That’s just exactly what Tokyo’s The Soho are offering – thanks to the sublime talents of interiors gurus, Wonderwall, who’ve transformed this typical multi-storey office space into a vision of supreme luxury. With services and amenities – bars, lounges, restaurants etc. – matching those of a five star hotel, Wonderwall have seamlessly fused English manor house opulence with sleek, contemporary minimalism and introduced bold multi-coloured walls, desks and panels.

It claims not to be an office, or a coffee-shop, but sitting in the Palermo Soho area of Buenos Aires, Urban Station is a decidedly cool, perfectly executed amalgamation of the two. Bright, airy and cool – Urban Station provides a real working environment for the mobile worker… you know, the one who’s on the seat you’re eyeing up in Starbucks but has no intention of moving… but then that’s the beauty of this place, there’s no old women prodding you for taking too long on that last email, no screaming kids spilling their frappuccinos all over your Mac Book. Cool vintage armchairs next to tables of art and business magazines… projectors, LCD screens, printers and fax machines (yes, you remember them)… coffee, breakfast and super-fast WiFi… Urban Station is rethinking the office space, for the better, and with plans for international expansion, this is one to watch…

With a façade that resembles the strobing effect that a newsreader’s dodgy tie can incur, Braga’s new building for the Instituto Empresarial do Minho (Minho Enterprises Institute), courtesy of Manuel Graça Dias + Egas José Vieira Arquitectos, is far from a vision of beauty, however, the intriguing optical effect created by the houndstooth/chessboard white and blue tiling mash-up offers the building a unique character that sets it apart from practically anything we’ve seen before. Captivating, unconventional, yet strangely compelling…..

Tucked away in the corner of your suburban garden like the bastard offspring of a traditional garden shed and a lunar landing module, the Archipod is a whole new reason to work from home. Centered around the concept of removing the tie between work and home, the Archipod allows for an external working space without the cost, bureaucracy and inconvenience of building an extension or out-building. Of course it’s not just your office you could set up in your ‘pod… it’s an ideal space for a mini recording studio, a rather luxurious playroom for the kids, or perhaps just loading with tools and acting as a designer replacement for your shed… whatever you do with it, you’ll have endless hours of fun watching the neighbours reaction to the wooden spaceship that’s taken up residence in your cabbage patch….

Not the sort of glamorous location particularly famed for cutting edge architecture and design, this is the first, and could quite possibly be the last, post we write about Aberystwyth. Having said that, London based architects, Heatherwick studio, have brought rural Wales right into the 22nd century with these beautifully futuristic low-cost business units for sixteen start-up arts enterprises for Aberystwyth Arts Centre, part of the University of Wales Aberystwyth. Cheaply produced stainless steel the thickness of kitchen foil creates the unique crinkled appearance of these intriguing business pods whilst reflecting the trees, leaves and sky of the surrounding forest.

Located in the Jaarbeurs complex, Utrecht, Netherlands, this congress facility with 8 meeting rooms has been designed to offer flexibility for clients who are looking for non-conformist meeting space and is a cacophony of light, space and interactive projections.

The main congress hall, which can hold 700 people, is designed with a 100% transparent ETFE roof to provide the experience of having a congress meeting under the open sky whilst elsewhere LED walls and light ceilings made of fabric can change in colour to create multiple different atmospheres and moods. Throughout two tunnels which lead to the Media Plaza, moving images are projected onto the floor and respond to the movement of people.

Meet is an innovative new concept in business meeting that is the brainchild of Sara and Marc Schiller. A two-story, 2,500-square-foot SoHo loft has been transformed by the duo, with the help of The Apartment (one of New York’s premier design consultancies), into a creative setting for meetings, conferences, pitches, brainstorming sessions, or whatever meet you may have arranged.
