Having worked with the likes of Andrée Putman, Karim Rashid, and Tom Dixon in the past, the fantastically cultured champagne house, Veuve Clicquot, are no strangers to collaborating on the most contemporary of design projects, and this year is no different. As part of the renovation of their Reims town house, Hôtel du Marc, Brazilian designers Fernando & Humberto Campana and French designer Mathieu Lehanneur have been invited to decorate the hotel with new works… works that are, this week, being showcased at the 2010 Milan Furniture Fair. We’ve bagged some exclusive photos of the Campana Brothers‘ piece, “Gloriette”, a structure that will sit in the gardens of the hotel, dedicated to outdoor tasting and champagne degustation…..

With even the likes of Wallpaper* and Dezeen getting excited about Nissan’s cult, opinion-splitting Cube, it was only a matter of time before a plethora of Mini style collaborations would begin to eek out… In what, as far as we’re aware, is the first – of undoubtedly so many to come – super cool French ‘freeski’ brand, Black Crows have partnered with the Japanese giants to deliver two special edition Cubes in signature bold colouring with accompanying iconic skis. If this is all it takes to look hot on the slopes… count us in.
Being of the privileged generation who have experienced both life with and life without the Internet, we often face the dilemma, “what Internet experiences have truly changed our lives?” Some may say that Internet shopping has revolutionised the entire world of commerce, others will talk with great excitement about how information on just about anything is accessible within seconds from just about anywhere. We on the other hand are always on the look out for something a little different, and probably not so profound, Kutiman, an Israeli afro-beat/electro/funk producer has produced one such example of earth shattering greatness. Sampling 100’s of freaks, geeks and undiscovered bedroom artists from various YouTube videos, Kutiman has created an Internet phenomena that could rival porn, yes, it’s that good. Thru You is, as far as we know, the first and if not, certainly the finest, collection of YouTube mash-ups that beggar belief in their complexity and innovation, the beauty being that Kutiman has created tracks which standalone when listened to without the accompanying video cut-up’s and in the process could well have unearthed some future stars. Stay tuned, YouTube sampling could be the next big thing.

Famous for his bold graffiti/punk art and fashion that captured the essence of 1980’s New York, Stephen Sprouse was also responsible for kick-starting the ‘it-bag’ trend with his graffiti covered designs for Louis Vuitton back in 2001. Starting his career in the late 1970’s by making stage outfits for his downtown neighbour Debbie Harry, his work soon influenced popular culture worldwide and continues to do so today with this posthumous collection (Sprouse died tragically in 2004) faithfully designed by Marc Jacobs. The range of leather goods, accessories, shoes and streetwear certainly won’t be the most subtle or reserved collection of 2009, but true to Sprouse’s pop-art vision and punk aesthetic it is bold, exciting and still relevant today.
Nigerian Gangster
Music
August 28th, 2008
We’ve often wondered why there has been so little reference in contemporary music to the classic era of African funk, led with such gusto by the godfather of afrobeat Fela Kuti. Whilst it has taken The Verve some 15 years to release 4 albums, Kuti released some 20+ albums in his ‘71-’76 golden period, with no detriment to quality.
Following the revival of the afrobeat sound in indie, through bands like Vampire Weekend, Yeasayer and Foals, Chicago based producer DJ Mike Love has dusted off the black American blueprint for funk and given us the greatest mash-up since The Grey Album, in the form of ‘Nigerian Gangster’, a similar track for track fusion of a whole Jay-Z album, this time replacing the Beatles experimentation with Fela Kuti’s drive, passion and outrageous funk.
We need say no more, you simply need to head over here and download the album in full. Wigging out is non-negotiable.
Ok, ok, just wait a minute, we’re not overly keen on shameless, rich superstars exploiting their own music in the name of marketing either, but this one demands a little more attention, not least as it goes some way to redeeming our disappointment in the new N.E.R.D record. Converse are seemingly sticking heavily to showing off their rock n’ roll heritage and have devised a campaign entitled ‘Three Artists, One Song’ which apparently will see artists as diverse as Deerhunter, Does It Offend You, Yeah? and Gallows along with of course the 3 effortlessly cool individuals who have put together this track, which sees Pharrell ‘Midas Touch’ Williams getting up-beat and funky and not at all croony as he so painfully does on his supergroup’s latest LP.
A video along with multi-format campaign is to follow, in the meantime, don’t waste anymore time and check out ‘My Drive Thru‘….
