Peter Saville x England

September 1st, 2010

Manchester’s finest, Sir (OK, perhaps not yet, but it’s certainly deserved) Peter Saville, is a designer of the highest calibre… his back catalogue of work is unrivaled in it’s influence on modern popular culture. From the iconic Factory Records sleeves of Joy Division’s Closer, New Order’s groundbreaking Blue Monday 12″ and the beautiful cover of their 1983 album Power, Corruption and Lies, through his collaborations with the world’s leading fashion houses and to his work as Creative Director of the city of Manchester, Saville’s designs have always held an elegance, simplicity and sophistication that have seen him stride above his peers – becoming a true design icon of his time….

Foot Patrol, London

super rare sneaker store... within a store...

Foot Patrol, London

September 1st, 2010

Designed by Wilson Brothers and Brinkworth, the layout of Berwick Street’s Foot Patrol is every bit as unique as the perfectly curated stock inside. The understated, street-side façade paves way for a brilliantly conceived ’store within a store’ – all recycled scaffold board and satin black steel fixtures – that seemingly floats within the ‘outer’ store. As for the stock, it’s high grade, sneaker-geek stuff… SMU (special make-up) versions of new and classic sports shoes, along with unique Foot Patrol products are handpicked by Michael Kopelman, original Foot Patrol owner and current Creative Director – needless to say, the fusion of cutting-edge interiors and top quality stock will ensure this is THE sneaker destination store for years to come…

Lazy Oaf ‘In The Mix’ Rucksack’s

August 17th, 2010

We’re big fans of East London’s super-cool creative/fashion label, Lazy Oaf, and have long been admirers – we featured their Southend-on-Sea, trashy seaside SS10 Look Book back in May – of their wonderfully bright graphic tees and über-kitsch stationery and accessories. It’s no surprise then, that we’re suitably impressed with the latest additions to their collection, and our favourite by far has to be this wonderfully over the top, rainbow coloured rucksack. If you really couldn’t give two hoots whether or not brown is the new black and are yet to look up the dictionary definition of refined – and let’s be frank, that’s just no fun is it? – then this super statement of happiness and easy-going attitude is most certainly for you…

Egyptian Hip Hop by Hedi Slimane

August 11th, 2010

Former Dior Homme creative director, and responsible for the famous skinny black suit / white shirt / black tie silhouette that became synonymous with the brand and of those in the UK indie scene who so regularly sported the look – most famously including friend and muse, Peter Doherty – Frenchman Hedi Slimane also has a keen ear for upcoming talent. And, there’s no hotter an upcoming talent in the UK right now than Manc kids – and we quite literally mean kids – Egyptian Hip Hop…..

LUXE City Guides White Tiger Chest

August 2nd, 2010

We already love LUXE City Guides’ super-cool and straight to the point pocket-sized travel companions, so, we’re understandably blown away by this utterly opulent celebration of the Year of The Tiger courtesy of an exclusive collaboration between über-chic Chinese brand, Shanghai Tang, and LUXE. Limited to 70 individually numbered and engraved boxes, which are “handmade in maple and ebony veneer maquetry, lined in ultra-elegant kumquat silk” and packed with 30 LUXE City Guides, it’ll set you back around £900 – but, if you’re looking for wallet-draining restaurants, boutiques and hotels in the likes of Phuket, Shanghai, Ho Chi Minh City, Dubai and Los Angeles then this may well not pose a problem….

New Balance’s Shoebox Factory

July 15th, 2010

Having been produced in the UK for more than 100 years, and with a ‘no major sponsorship’ mantra that affords them this luxury, New Balance are a unique brand in a big-money, cheap-manufacture sportswear market – and that’s as refreshingly admirable as it is remarkable for this day and age. Showing at this month’s Bread & Butter Berlin trade show, their Flimby shoebox factory pays homage to the real Cumbrian factory that still churns out classic styles with modern materials and commemorates the brand’s core beliefs. Oh, and it looks rather cute too…..

Freitag iPad Sleeves

July 9th, 2010

You may already be aware of Zurich based innovators, Freitag, and their brilliant range of recycled bags and accessories made from “well-travelled truck tarpaulins, unravelled seat belts, bicycle inner tubes beyond repair and recycled airbags”. You may have also seen their brilliant Zurich flagship store – that we visited on our Swiss design trip earlier this year – that follows the company’s ethos, being constructed entirely from rusty, recycled freight-containers – stacked 86ft high. Something you won’t see until early August are these beautiful iPad sleeves, complete with a ‘one-pull’ strap system for easy access, a ‘velvety’ inner lining, and their iconic recycled tarpaulin outers.
