If there was one nation you could rely on to truly push the boundaries of international hospitality, you’d most likely put the safe money on the United Arab Emirates.. after all, Dubai has been rewriting the rule book for the last ten years. The UAE’s capital, and second largest city, is staging somewhat of a comeback however, and with last years hugely successful – not to mention awe-inspiring – Grand Prix, under it’s belt, Abu Dhabi – recently declared the richest city in the world – is shaping up to be a true contender.

The Yas Hotel, Abu Dhabi

Half on land, half on water, overlooking both the new marina and the inspirational new Grand Prix circuit, there can be no doubts as to the quality of The Yas Hotel’s location… nor can their with it’s breath-taking design, courtesy of New York architects Asymptote Architecture. 500 rooms over 85,000-square-metres, two twelve story hotel towers linked by a monocoque steel and glass bridge, lit by colour changing LEDs linked to video feeds that play out over the entire surface of the building, rooftop pools, eight international restaurants, a luxury spa and, oh, did we mention the location? Green T. House, Beijing

January 26th, 2010

Launched in 1997 by musician, artist, trendsetter and tea connoisseur, Ms. Zhang Jin Jie (aka JinR), Green T. House began life as a simple tea house, 3 tables that would serve as a cultural hub for fellow artists and musicians… Within 5 years, JinR had turned her hand to haute cuisine, revolutionised Beijing’s restaurant scene, been described by Time Magazine as “China’s first celebrity chef” and in the process had developed a unique cultural brand in Green T. House.

Green T. House, Beijing

Of course that was never going to be enough for the irrepressible entrepreneur, and 4 years ago she pushed the boundaries of her vision further, launching the Green T. House Living concept on the outskirts of Beijing city, an “intersection of art, culture, and community” that delivered dining and art events and introduced JinR’s signature range of teas, furniture and design objects. Spacious loft style villa accommodation and a unique bathhouse spa were introduced in June 2009…. dare we say, completing Green T. House’s offering as a truly inspiring and unique brand by moving from the realms of tea houses, art events and restaurants into spa and hospitality? With an entrepreneur this single-minded, innovative and influential at the helm however, we can’t see the Green T. House brand standing still for too long…..

Vliegtuigsuite, Teuge Airport, Netherlands

January 21st, 2010

Sauna, jacuzzi, 24/7 hostess, 3 flat screens, Blu-Ray player…… sounds like a hotel suite and half hey? What about the Cold War-era cockpit? Yep, you heard correctly… Cold War-era cockpit! Serving as a restaurant for 15 years following German reunification, this 1960, 120 seater plane, that was once an East German government vehicle serving the likes of Erich Honecker, is now a full-on luxury hotel suite, grounded at Teuge Airport. The clean, modern white interiors and luxury facilities installed by Dutch company Hotelsuites.nl mean that the past can easily be forgotten, however stepping into the untouched cockpit offers a real glint of excitement… if that’s not enough however, parachute jumps or stunt plane rides can also be arranged. In search of something truly unique? This has to be it.

Le Gray Hotel, Beirut

If you read our recent feature on predictions for hot destinations in 2010, you’ll already be aware of Lebanon’s potential for stealing the march on some of the Middle East’s more predictable travel destinations, and indeed the sheer sexiness of it’s capital, “the Paris of the Middle East”, Beirut. Design Hotels™ & Wallpaper* iPhone Apps

January 14th, 2010

If there’s one thing that’s rather disappointed us with iPhone applications, it’s surely been the undeniable dearth of apps that ooze in vogue sophistication… consequently, the recent news of apps from two of the world’s leading lifestyle brands has gone someway to unfurling our brow. Rather similar in terms of content, Design Hotels™ and Wallpaper* have both released city guides with a difference… the difference, of course, being that the recommended hotels, bars, restaurants and sights are all, reassuringly elegant, stylish and achingly hip. Available for Amsterdam, Miami, Copenhagen, Berlin, Paris, London, Sao Paulo, Vienna, Shanghai and Barcelona, Design Hotels™ guides are a collaboration with the culture savvy ‘Unlike City Guides’ and include regularly updated information on shops, clubs, bars, eating out, arts and culture, sights and experiences, and of course, hotels. An events calendar promises much, but as yet appears rather desolate…. let’s hope the promise of regular, seamless updates is a genuine one…..

Design Hotels™ & Wallpaper* iPhone Apps

Wallpaper*’s guides are essentially an app version of their hugely successful, and rather brilliant, Phaidon City Guides, with the added benefit of knowing how far the featured shops, bars, hotels and sights are from your current location. Currently available for their top 10 selling guides, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Berlin, London, Los Angeles, Milan, New York, Paris, Rome and Tokyo, Wallpaper*’s guides include a suitably high-brow ‘architour’ along with insiders tips, brilliant boutiques, iconic landmarks, neighbourhood guides and city escapes… at £2.39 a pop, if you’re travelling to one of said cities, they’re an essential purchase.

Kameha Grand, Bonn

a little bit of crazy on the banks of the Rhine....

Kameha Grand, Bonn

January 8th, 2010

Sitting on the banks of the Rhine, in the former capital of West Germany, Kameha Grand is a grand hotel with… well, a lot of a difference. Close to the city centre and overlooking the majestic ‘Siebengebirge’ mountain range, Kameha Grand is every bit your typical large-scale business/leisure type affair… that is, of course, until you step inside. Designed by the ever inspirational, yet clearly rather deranged, dutch-master Marcel Wanders, the interior design is a typically tripped out fairytale from the psychedelic designer with gigantic urn-like pillars and Wanders’ signature prints on everything from the floors and walls to the bed of the heated outdoor infinity pool. A geothermal power plant in the basement means that the Kameha can account for 70 percent of its heating and cooling needs, meaning that this enormous space, the Kameha can host conferences, fashion shows and concerts along with it’s huge bars, restaurants, spa, 190 rooms and 63 suites, can stand up for itself ecologically, important in a city that has found itself hosting a number of large international conferences in the area of environment and sustainable development.

Kameha Grand, Bonn

With a series of themed rooms including the ‘Beethoven Suite’, old Ludwig van was Bonn’s most famed son, and the ‘Fairplay Suite’ with it’s Wii, Putting Green, Dartboard and more, the Kameha Grand, whilst offering all the traditional amenities (and so much more), is thankfully about as far as you can get from the typical business/leisure complex it represents, and as such, a truly refreshing surprise.

The Michelberger Hotel, Berlin

January 5th, 2010

Gritty and creative, Berlin is the world’s capital of cool. Affordable artist space and a unique constantly evolving scene ensure that the once divided German capital is a hot-bed of creative talent from around the globe, a fact that will no doubt guarantee the success of 31 year old Tom Michelberger’s new venture, The Michelberger Hotel. Born of a vision to create a hotel that is “as creative as an ad agency”, The Michelberger throws modern hotel convention to the wind…. as Michelberger himself says, “Perfection does not create memories, because memories only result from movement, from a lively experience of interaction – with people, the surroundings and the atmosphere.”

The Michelberger Hotel, Berlin

Blending the best of hostel and hotel, everywhere you look there is creativity, personality, humour and radical individuality. Odd bits of furniture, bare concrete walls, books, magazines and more books…. the space is as unique as you will see in an International hotel and truly one that cannot be reproduced again. One-off lampshades made from vintage books, unique wallpaper and televisions that play a custom-created loop of films and clips…. every last detail has been treated with a peerless creativity, even down to the roomkeys and playful do-not-disturb signs. If you’re looking for a hotel experience that is truly like no other, try The Michelberger… in a city that is truly like no other.

Don’t miss the rest of the must-see imagery….

The Vine Hotel & Spa, Madeira

December 11th, 2009

It’s chilly, really quite chilly… and it seems to be darker longer than it’s light… and we’re full of a cold. Yes, the winter is taking a hold and what better remedy than to daydream about sunnier climes, designer sun loungers and red wine bath treatments. OK, so we might not have even ever considered a red wine bath treatment, but it’s called ‘The Vine’ and who are we to say if they’re taking their theme to literally? Located in the centre of Funchal, Madeira’s picturesque, historic capital, The Vine Hotel is the sleek, contemporary and sophisticated vision of the wonderfully talented, award-winning Portuguese designer Nini Andrade Silva. From the sensational infinity pool that overlooks the beautiful city below to the crisp lines of the uber-modern rooms with glass dividers and free standing baths, everything about The Vine literally screams luxury, and when it looks this good we just know that we’ll be dreaming of red wine bath treatments right through until spring…..
