Poetry. It’s not just for tweed jackets. At least that’s what the guys behind Popshot magazine tell us, and who are we to argue when it’s this beautifully presented? Each issue centres around a given theme upon which the poets are invited to write about, said poems are then shipped out to select artists who then illustrate based upon their interpretation of the piece… in these times of fast paced digital technology, what could be more refreshing and creative? Bi-annual, the latest, and only second, edition is based around the theme of ‘us and them’, with observations on the likes of prejudice, hierarchy, class, the rat race and the frightening possibility of being replaced by robots, it’s both a literary and visual treat and is a wonderfully designed reminder that poetry is as fresh and relevant today than it ever has been…. well done guys!
It’s fair to say that we get a lot of junk landing on our doormat, sometimes we’re even missing the fact that the dog used to destroy the mail when she was a pup, it’s simply a pleasure to behold then when something truly inspiring is delivered by the long suffering ‘postie’. That something special is Nobrow Press’ wonderful new biannual illustrated publication which features carefully chosen artists and illustrators contributing work based on a common theme, this time being ‘Gods & Monsters‘. Printed in just 2 colours on a heavy, oversized stock, this debut edition, limited to only 3,000, features the work of 24 talented international designers and looks more ‘design book’ than magazine, meaning that this high quality publication is a snip at a mere nine quid. Expect to see a lot more from Nobrow Press, we for one can’t wait….

Started in 2002 as ‘a reaction to the mass of bland, uninspiring men’s fashion stores lining the UK’s high streets’, Steve Sanderson’s Oi Polloi in Manchester is a pioneer in the revival of traditional British gentleman-type garb with names like Barbour, Belstaff and Nigel Cabourn sitting alongside equally blokey international labels such as Atelier LaDurance, A.P.C. and Lee. Currently being given away in a limited edition with all orders, ‘Rig Out’, a naval term, is a small and well written fanzine produced by the boys at Oi Polloi, with some brilliant design and photography, that gives their customers an insight into their interests, sensibilities and buying policy.
It’s Nice That is one of our favourite design blogs and to celebrate their second anniversary they are launching their first print publication, issue one of their new bi-annual design magazine. Always delivering flawless content from some of the best designers in the world today, It’s Nice That is a must-visit bible for ground breaking contemporary design and features a no nonsense approach to it’s features that they promise to bring to their publication, a magazine they hope will break the mould of traditional design journalism by delivering honest content from a host of designers in this full colour 128 page document.

Much as we enjoy the fantasy of leafing through the latest edition of Wallpaper* in the hopeless belief that one day we will own a £5,000 Italian designer CD rack, tread barefoot on our 18th Century reclaimed wooden floorboards and take off from our poolside helipad, it’s nice sometimes to be brought down to earth with a little bit of realism, and that’s exactly what you get from Barcelona-based interiors magazine Apartamento.

With a contents page that cleverly utilises a grid system more commonly seen on a map, Is Not Magazine has no set content guidelines and encourages contributions from around the world.
