Haiko Cornelissen, a Dutch architect with an office in Amsterdam and New York, clearly misses nature when he’s holed up in his city apartments; his picNYC table offers the surreal, yet stimulating, answer to those who share these emotions. No more need you descend upon the idyllic countryside with your gingham blanket, tweed jacket and and pink champagne – like you were going to anyway? – Cornelissen’s aluminium tabletop framework for grass, soil and drainage stones brings the outdoor experience right into your swanky loft apartment; it’s the middle-class agoraphobic’s dream come true…

We’ve featured the riotously beautiful work of Belgian conceptual artist cum interiors/architecture guru, Arne Quinze before… here, and here – and we’ve been patiently waiting for more from Belgium’s finest for some time. Conceived to entice visitors into Shanghai’s Jing’an Sculpture Park, Quinze’s Red Beacon is typically unrestrained, with 55 tonnes of wooden planking, seemingly slung in fury at a canopy structure. It’s of course this wonderfully haphazard style that gives the finished installation it’s mystical, alluring quality… we just pity the fools who have to put it all together…

And here was us thinking axes were just for those who got their hands dirty for a living, or serial killers. Looks like we were wrong however, or at least that’s what designer and author Peter Buchanan-Smith, and outdoorsman and environmental entrepreneur Graeme Cameron of Best Made Co. tell us, but then they would, because it’s their wonderfully stylish (did we just say that about an axe?) axes that we’re talking about. All made to order, with hand painted, varnished and polished Tennessee Hickory handles, Best Made Co.’s tools mean serious business and if you’re tool collection is in need of a luxe upgrade then they’re certainly a good start.
