super rare sneaker store... within a store...

Designed by Wilson Brothers and Brinkworth, the layout of Berwick Street’s Foot Patrol is every bit as unique as the perfectly curated stock inside. The understated, street-side façade paves way for a brilliantly conceived ’store within a store’ – all recycled scaffold board and satin black steel fixtures – that seemingly floats within the ‘outer’ store. As for the stock, it’s high grade, sneaker-geek stuff… SMU (special make-up) versions of new and classic sports shoes, along with unique Foot Patrol products are handpicked by Michael Kopelman, original Foot Patrol owner and current Creative Director – needless to say, the fusion of cutting-edge interiors and top quality stock will ensure this is THE sneaker destination store for years to come…

Trends come and go, but there’s one room in the home where a little traditional and class can go a long way – and that’s the kitchen, or, the “heart of every home” as longtime friends June Summerill and Bernadette Bishop call it. There’s a reason why AGA cookers will never go away, and why the likes of Jamie Oliver’s kitchen accessories tend to hark back to classic styles – and it’s the same reason why both Tricia Guild of Designers Guild, and Ruth Rogers of The River Cafe have declared Summerill & Bishop’s Clarendon Cross shop their favourite kitchen store. It’s that, sometimes, cutting-edge just doesn’t quite cut it in the kitchen… and, whilst Summerill & Bishop may have modern styles amongst their classic lines – the care and attention with which their stock is carefully curated, and sourced from around the world, ensures a warm, characteristic feeling consistently runs through their charming collection…

With a meticulously curated selection of interiors and accessories – from iconic Eames chairs, through Arne Jacobsen kitchenware to a beautifully selected range of design books – and an elegant monochrome space, courtesy of the quite brilliant interior design specialists Found Associates, Spitalfield’s outpost of The Lollipop Shoppe – there is also a Brighton branch – is one of those delightful boutiques you find so very difficult to leave. The listed, two-storey space has retained it’s original elegance, with bespoke joinery incorporating an existing display system into an internally illuminated black lacquered system. Contrasting the exposed brickwork, and allowing the fine selection of products to be the true heroes…..

Part of Aaron Bondaroff and Al Moran’s vision of an “extraordinary creative mash-up”, OHWOW is a collaborative art venture that, whilst achingly pretentious, delivers products, events and spaces that are a feast of sheer design brilliance. Their latest venture is no different – located in leafy Greenwich Village, the tiny, yet far from diminutive in style and elegance, below street level retail space has been designed by Architecture At Large’s Rafael de Cárdenas to “echo a classic black and white, pre-war NYC bathroom”. Whilst we’re not too familiar with pre-war New York bathrooms – no matter how much research we like to do – we’re firmly familiar with heart-stopping interiors, and this is very high on our list of fabulously unique and perfectly executed designs…..
heavy dose of art & drama injected into the cult of 'pop-up'.....

As many of the larger brands around the world continue to deliver staid, unadventurous – often undecorated – ‘pop-up’ stores, the once stimulating cult of guerrilla stores has been written off by many as somewhat of a fad… a tired one at that. It’s enlightening then to see the concept presented with style, energy and a distinct hallmark of class. Belgian fashion label, A.F. Vandevorst, have done just that here with their world war era field hospital concept for this Antwerp pop-up… the intention of the ‘Aktion’ guerrilla stores is to present the installation within unoccupied premises around the world – including boutiques, laundrettes and bakeries – for a maximum of three months at a time. The Antwerp store has recently closed, however it’s thought that Brussels could be next….
Romanian clothing store has a 'sharp' look....

Whilst something may well have been lost in translation, Romanian architecture, interiors and product design studio – Square One – tell us that their wonderfully stark and geometric interior for a Bucharest fashion store Entrance, was conceived to tell a story, one of “Imaginary animals that abide in a surreal forest, a refuge, a route.” The outcome actually delivers on their promise – the sharp, geometric objects that give the interior it’s unique look, have been designed by ‘illustrating a number of animals in motion’, and the tree-like lighting has been conceived to further enhance this kind of space age, computer game safari scene. Decidedly unique, remarkably diverse… yet ultimately intriguing and beautiful, Square One have delivered an interior of true originality….
minimalism meets randomness in striking interior....

Shop fittings, especially so in small shops, can be so depressingly formulaic. Rows of railing, shelves, and the odd unique touch here and there…. that’s what we find so refreshing about Gitta Gschwendtner’s strikingly minimalistic interior for Shoreditch’s design curiosity emprorium, Lik+Neon. The design store’s unique range of clothing, art mags, objects and jewellery are given room to breathe by Gschwendtner’s clever use of square pegs, bungee cord and limited use of traditional shop fittings. The pièce de résistance here is the milk carton ceiling installation…. hanging like a sublime cloud of light over the bright white interior, the one-off lighting system is an artwork in it’s own right – and a fitting finale to a truly unique interior.
