The recently opened Malmö outpost of Sweden’s Museum of Modern Art, from Stockholm studio Tham & Videgård Arkitekter, is both challenging, and beautiful, thanks to the new extension’s jaw-dropping, eye-popping, façade – all clad in shocking, perforated orange metal. Inside, the former electricity station – dating back to 1900 – has been completely refurbished to meet International museum standards and the theme of perforated metal is continued through to the ceiling of the grand turbine hall. Contemporary, unique and so very stylish, Malmö’s new museum provides the city with an exciting new icon….

Designed by Jonas Nordgren & Artur Moustafa, Flight is part of a debut collection from new furniture manufacturer, RVW Productions – of which Nordgren himself has founded with fellow designer, Johannes Herbertsson – that is showing at this week’s Stockholm Furniture Fair. The exhibition that also includes designs from Johannes Herbertsson, Karl-Henrik Rennstam, Martin Berg and We Heart favourites, Form Us With Love, presents Malmö based RVW’s promising range, and this elegant series, that comprises a one, two and three-seat sofa and table, is one of our favourites. Giving the impression of floating above it’s sleek, contemporary frame and gracefully combining soft curves with sharp edges… the Flight Series is so very Swedish, and oh so very desirable.

A winner at last year’s ‘World Architecture Festival’ in Barcelona, Restaurant Tusen, designed by Swedish architects Murman Arkitekter, is a wonderfully discrete building that perfectly befits it’s exposed surroundings. Almost religious or tribal in it’s design, the restaurant sits in solitude within the mountains of the Ramundberget resort, a resort that prides itself upon resisting intrusive growth, and one for which Tusen is so very well suited. It’s circular form affords breath-taking 360 degree views, whilst the nature of it’s exterior allows for snow to rest on it’s façade, creating a graceful camouflaged appearance, allowing it to blend seamlessly into the scenery…. at one with nature, this is architecture at it’s very best….

A private property in the small Swedish town of Landskrona, Townhouse has been designed by the fledgling design office Elding Oscarson, run by Johan Oscarson and Jonas Elding, a duo with seriously healthy design CVs behind them. Occupying a space of just 75 square metres, Townhouse looks like a bright white slab of the future dropped into the past, yet when the street is viewed as a whole, manages to blend in gracefully with it’s olde worlde surroundings. The single, continuous space, that is set out over three floors, opens to the street, through the middle of the living space and up to the sky, creating an airy, harmonious space that defies the potential claustrophobic feel a property of this size could deliver. With a wealth of experience in both Swedish and international architecture, from museums to private houses, interiors to furniture and product design, we’re sure that we’ll be seeing more inspirational work from Elding Oscarson…..

If you’ve been following us for sometime then you’ll already know how much we love top Swedish designers ‘Form Us With Love‘, if you haven’t then… we do, we really do. It’s exciting news for us then, that renowned Swedish lighting manufacturer ateljé Lyktan have let our favourite Swedish studio loose on a new pendent lamp design, and rather chic it is too. All matte black soft lacquer finish with an LED fitting, ‘Ogle’ has ‘the functionality of a spotlight combined with the elegance of a pendant lamp’ and, as you’ll see from our photos, it looks seriously sexy in clusters of 5 or more.

Hating to state the glaringly obvious, but the end of yet another rather nonexistent summer is drawing ever closer, it’s dark by 9 and we can’t remember the last 24 hours without rain. The pessimist in us has already been making plans for the winter, and with a pretty significant New Year on the horizon, it’s a thought a few of you may also have had. Reopening for the skiing season on December 1st, the Copperhill Mountain Lodge, situated in the charming ski resort of Åre, is the perfect place to enjoy a ridiculously chic winter break. World class architecture, designer furniture, a gourmet restaurant, Sami-themed spa and champagne bar are some of the unique luxuries which are accompany the hotel’s extravagant list of activities that includes dog sledding, horseback riding, ice driving, cave tours, white water rafting and off-piste and helicopter skiing to name but a few. If you’re already bemoaning the lack of another English summer and dreaming of winter luxe then this is the place for you. Us, well we’re just hoping that writing this feature brings the contrary British sun out for one last stint…..

Much like a bus (only a more efficient, better looking and stylish one) we wait months, maybe years, for a post on Sweden and then two totally unrelated, yet equally intriguing, stories hit our inbox in quick succession. This may be as far removed from boutique creative accommodation as could be, yet there must be something in the ice-cool Scandinavian air. Much like you wouldn’t expect boutique hotels to be dishing out rooms for nothing, you probably also would not have put money on someone producing sparkling wine from a birch tree. Back in 1785, however, that’s precisely what somebody did, and as you would expect, it didn’t catch on.
It wasn’t until recently, whilst indexing a unique archive containing 300 years worth of reports, essays and articles, that environmental engineer Peter Mosten stumbled across this ancient recipe. Curiosity got the better of him, and after a decade of experimentation Morsten finally achieved his labour of love, Sav™ sparkling elixir. Sav™’s content of natural sugars, calcium, phosphor, magnesium, manganese, zinc and iron mean that drinking, in theory, could be a relatively healthy experience, and whilst we’re not entirely sure that this will stand up as a marketing campaign for the fledgling company, it’s more than enough of an excuse for us. Cheers!

Gothenburg’s always been the coolest Swedish city. Stockholm’s pretty, Malmo’s dull, Uppsala’s academic. Yeah, for kicks, head west. And, should you be of a creative bent (and you’re reading this, so it’s a shoe-in) you might be able to save all your pennies for the city’s excellent bars. Cool Swedish clothing co, Elvine (think Howies, but without the sand) has opened Creator’s Inn. And if you thought Travelodge was cheap, this takes some beating.
The premise? If you’re cool, you stay for free. Honestly, we’ve checked the small print. You need to register online, and tell ‘em why they should put you up in this funky design hotel without parting with a single Krona, but for someone as creative as you, that should prove ‘inte problemmar’. Ja? They call it ‘creative social responsibility’ so, a little tip, don’t write ‘I want to come and party all night with gorgeous Swedes’. It won’t work, trust us.
